Rock Creek Regional Park

(Rockville, MD)

Go Ape’s first US course is centered around the beautiful 75-acre Lake Needwood, just outside Washington DC in Rockville, MD.  The course is surrounded by hiking trails through forests and along lakeshores, includes picnic areas, boat rentals, fishing and the beginning of the 12 mile Rock Creek hiker/biker trail into Washington DC.

The treetop adventure course is made up of numerous rope ladders, 34 crossings to include the Giants Leap and Cacapon Crossing, 2 tarzan swings and 5 zip lines.  There are 5 individual sections within the course, each section taking you higher into the forest canopy and finishing with a zip line more exciting than the previous one!

Get directions

By car

From the Capital Beltway (I-495 North), take either of the I-270 spurs north.  Follow I-270 North for almost 4 miles.  Take exit 8 for Shady Grove Road.  IMPORTANT - when merging onto exit 8 off of I-270, be sure to keep RIGHT at the fork and take the first exit ramp.  Keeping RIGHT will allow you to proceed onto Redland Blvd.  Continue to follow signs for Redland Blvd and Redland Road (Redland Blvd will merge into Redland Road without you knowing it) and continue on Redland Blvd/Road for 2.1 miles.  Turn right at Needwood Road and continue for 1.6 miles.  Turn right onto Beach Drive after you pass the lake on your right and enter Rock Creek Regional Park.  Continue for .75 miles.  Proceed through the stop sign and park in the lot on your right (Picnic Area 2).

From Frederick and locations north, take I-270 southbound.  Take exit 9A to merge onto 1-370 E toward Shady Grove Metro Station and follow for 1.4 miles.  Then take the Shady Grove Rd exit toward MD-355 S/Rockville (also known as Rockville Pike).  After .3 miles, turn left onto Shady Grove Road.  Continue on Shady Grove Road for .9 miles and then make a right onto Crabbs Branch Way.  Follow Crabbs Branch Way for .7 miles and then take the first left (at the light) onto Redland Road.  Continue on Redland for .3 miles and then make your first right onto Needwood Road.  Continue on Needwood Road for 1.6 miles.  Turn right onto Beach Drive after you pass the lake on your right and enter Rock Creek Regional Park.  Continue for .75 miles.  Proceed through the stop sign and park in the lot on your right (Picnic Area 2).

GPS Users! Many GPS systems will not direct you to the Go Ape cabin if you enter the park name or if you enter our address.  If your GPS system leads you to the Needwood Mansion, continue east on Needwood Rd, pass the lake on your right and enter the park via Beach Dr, which is the next right after the lake.  Continue on Beach Dr for .75 miles to Picnic Area 2 where you will find the closest parking lot to the Go Ape cabin.  Additionally, some GPS units will not recognize Needwood Lake Drive as a road.  If this is the case, we recommend that you use Needwood Lake Circle as this street is close to our location.  As GPS sometimes struggles to find Rock Creek Regional Park, we advise that you conduct a Google Maps search from your home address to 6129 Needwood Lake Drive, Derwood, MD 20855.

Important! Go Ape! Rock Creek Regional Park is in Rockville, Maryland at the Lake Needwood area of Rock Creek Regional Park and is not to be confused with other areas of the Rock Creek Regional Park system or Rock Creek Park in Washington DC.

By metro

By Metro - take the Red Line to the Shady Grove Station.  Prior to your arrival at Shady Grove, we recommend that you call Barwood Taxis at 301-984-1900, but if you forget there is a taxi stand outside the Westside exit.  Additionally, Metro welcomes bicycles on the weekends and the station is 3.5 miles from Go Ape Rock Creek Regional Park.  For more information on Metro, click here

By Bicycle or Walking (from Shady Grove Red Line Metro) - Leave the Shady Grove station through the Eastside exit and follow the signs for Redland Road.  At the light, turn left onto Redland Road and travel for .4 miles.  Turn right onto Needwood Road and travel for 1.6 miles.  Enter the park by turning right onto Beach Drive (after you pass the lake on your right), travel for .75 miles.  Come to the first stop sign and Go Ape will be on your left.  There will be a bicycle rack next to the parking lot of Picnic Area 2.

I have to start out by saying that I'm completely terrified of heights. Your staff was kind of enough to make me feel at easy and assure me I would be safe. One guy even yelled up and told me to keep on going when I had problems letting go of the tree. I only completed three courses because the fear got the better of me, but I loved the experience and would recommend anyone to try this. I'm planning on returning with family and friends and make it a fun full day of zip lining, volleyball and picnicking. Thanks for a great experience!

Longer course and more extreme sections. Maybe lunch on a platform area?

We got off to a late start waiting for other members of the 3:30 group, I think in the future when people are nearly a half hour late, those who are already there could begin. Other than that, great experience!
